When I drove a Miata, most Miata drivers would wave at each other, because hey we’re all happy go lucky Miata drivers here. Now I drive a BMW, and BMW drivers, well, they fit another stereotype. Yet lately, I’ve been getting lots of waves and approving nods from other BMW drivers. What’s happening???
I took my 135is out of winter storage a couple weeks ago, and since then, I’ve had a couple other 135i’s, an E92 335is and an E46 M3 all give me some kind of “nice car, bro” attention. Waves, nods, etc. I’m assuming they mean to say “bro,” because we’re all a bunch of douchebro BMW drivers here. Except not me, I am totally not a douchebro, because I use my turn signals.
Ok, maybe I’m still a douchebro.
One of the 135i’s and the 335is were (mostly?) stock, but the other 135i had some hideous ///M stripes and decals, and the M3 had weird dark blue angel eye bulbs, an exhaust that managed to make it sound like a Civic with a fart can, and was dumped on some kind of mesh wheels, not sure if actually BBS. So those two were definitely saying “bro.” But still, they’re not all bad, because they went out of their way to non-verbally compliment another BMW driver. That’s a small amount of positive karma!
What is the world coming to? Or maybe BMW drivers are only asshats to people not in BMWs?
Thinking about myself in relation to these pictures, I have:
Muscles
A healthy supply of creatine
25 or so pairs of sneakers
Several watches
A BMW
Well, shit.

If your vehicle has any type of open air ability (whether convertible, removeable roof, doors, or racecar/desert-runner-ness), you will experience some type of appreciative gesture from those “in the know.” If your 1-series isn’t a convertible, then I have no clue what’s going on!

This has only happened to me once in the E39, from a dude (or maybe a bro?) in an E34.

Every single one of them including mine has been a small, slightly-special BMW coupe. It’s like, “why yes, I did notice that your particular BMW coupe is somewhat unique within the pantheon of BMW coupes.”

I think it might be the “somewhat interesting BMW” wave. My Dad’s commented on it in his 335xi. He thinks it might have something to do with all the douchiest moving to Audis but I’m not sure. That might be a BMW owner defense mechanism.

Christ, I have an M-car and just bought an S-Audi. Does this mean I’m a bad person somehow?

I lean towards it being a defense mechanism and the more interesting BMW owners noticing each other!

Defender/Series drivers wave at each other all the time, because we know how rare they are. We only wave at other Land Rover drivers if they wave at us.

I wave to interesting BMWs, when I’m in my M3. I don’t wave to any old 328, though, because around here their owners (excuse me, lessees) would never know why in the world I was waving to them.

When I went from daily driving a miata to a BMW, I was slightly disappointed there was no such camaraderie. Now daily driving my corvette I occasionally notice just a bit of camaraderie from fellow vette drivers.

There’s a few other Z3s around town, and usually a wave occurs. One 1st gen Z4 driver waved at me.
That’s about it!

They could all be considered enthusiast vehicles. I mean, I wouldn’t turn any if them down. It’s not like Sally in her X5 is giving you the wave haha
